What isPopcorn Time and how does it work?
Popcorn Time downloads movies and TV-shows using torrents
At the core of Popcorn Time you find the BitTorrent protocol which makes it possible for users to share files over the internet. This is also known as P2P file sharing which is short for peer-to-peer. The BitTorrent protocol was invented in 2001 and has evolved to being the most used method for file transfer.
Before Popcorn Time and similar applications, users wanting to download movies or episodes using the protocol had to install a BitTorrent client and then go to websites such as The Pirate Bay to search for and download torrent files that subsequently could be opened with the client. The torrent file doesn’t contain any of the wanted video file but only tells the downloader what to download from other users sharing it.
The next step is to wait for the video to finish downloading after which it can be watched. If you want subtitles for your video you have add a step where you go to a subtitle website and find what you need.
The BitTorrent protocol is brilliant and once you get the hang of it, the process becomes easy but it has always been quite cumbersome and thus mostly used by those experienced with computers and IT (nerds). Many have simply been thrown off by the somewhat complicated process which has prevented torrent downloading from truly reaching the masses.
Popcorn Time iOS, iPad, iPhone and iPod app
Popcorn Time iOS in not available in the App Store. In order to install it on your device you’re forced to resort to alternative methods.
Popcorn Time is a controversial program that although not illegal by definition is so in practice since virtually all movies and TV-shows found in the menus are protected by copyrights. For that simple reason you’re not going to find a Popcorn Time app in App Store and you probably never will. However, this doesn’t mean that users of portable Apple products (iPad, iPhone and also iPod Touch) can’t get a Popcorn Time app on their unit, they just need to jump through a few hoops first.
There are two ways of getting Popcorn Time on your iOS unit: The easy and recommended method using iOS Installer and the not so easy method of using Cydia which means jailbreaking the device.
Install Popcorn Time iPhone app with iOS Installer
This is the easiest, least intrusive and thus the recommended method of installing Popcorn Time apps on iPhone or iPad. If it for some reason doesn’t work you can try the jailbreak-method as described below.
The first step is to make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and the appropriate cable to connect iPad/iPhone and PC. The next step is to download and install iOS Installer which can be found here. The last step is to run iOS Installer and simply follow the instructions. The process is very easy and can successfully be completed by everybody.
Install Popcorn Time for iOS on iPad or iPhone with iOS Installer or Cydia
The method installs the Popcorn Time iOS app from time4popcorn and is available for Windows PC and Mac OS X.
Go to iOS Installer
Install Popcorn Time iOS App with Cydia
This method involves jailbreaking your iPhone or iPad. Most are very reluctant in doing so out of fear of losing the warranty but if you do decide to jailbreak your unit and want to make use of your warranty afterwards, it’s as simple as restoring the iPhone or iPad in iTunes and everything is back to normal – Even in the prying eyes of an Apple technician.
Jailbreaking your unit won’t change it in a major way, it just adds a few but major functions one of them being the ability to install apps that can’t be found in the App Store.
How you jailbreak your unit depends on the version of iOS that’s installed on it. The latest version is iOS 8 so the following guide will be for units with iOS 8 installed.
If you have an older version of iOS installed you can follow one of the guides found here.
If you’ve already jailbroken your device, you can skip to the bottom of this article and go straight to the installation of the iOS Popcorn Time app.
Jailbreaking guide for iOS 8 – iOS 8.1
This guide requires the following items: An iOS unit (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch), a PC (Windows or OSX (Mac)) and a USB cable for your unit. Don’t connect unit and PC yet.
Supported iOS units
iPhone 6 Plus
iPad (2, 3, 4, Air, Air 2, mini 1, mini 2, mini 3)
iPod touch 5
Jailbreak with Pangu
Before starting the jailbreaking process you need to disable passcode lock (if it’s enabled). This is done in settings -> general.
You also need to turn off “Find my iPhone”, this is done in settings -> iCloud. You can re-enable both passcode lock and Find My iPhone once the unit has been jailbroken.
Enable Airplane Mode (Swipe up to open the control panel).
If you’re unit has been automatically updated to iOS (OTA update) you need to restore it with iTunes. Apple has a guide for doing just that.
Back up your data in case anything goes wrong. This is done in settings -> iCloud.
Start iTunes and leave it running in the background for the remaining steps.
You need iTunes 12.0.1 or newer, get the latest version here.
Download Pangu here and install it on your PC.
Pangu is the software that jailbreaks your unit. It doesn’t contain virus, malware, spyware or anything similar.
Windows: Right click the Pangu icon and choose “Run as administrator”
Once Pangu is up and running; connect your iOS unit to the PC with the USB cable.
Press the big “Start Jailbreak” button and then “Already did”. This starts the actual jailbreaking.
Your unit will reboot a few times during this process so please remain patient and don’t panic, it’s completely normal. Once it’s all over Pangu will give the message “Jailbreak succeded”.
Your iOS unit has now been jailbroken and you can continue to the installation of the Popcorn Time app.
Installing the Popcorn Time iOS App on your iPhone or iPad
In cydia, enter the URL for the time4popcorn repo to install the iOS Popcorn Time app: http://cydia.popcorn-time.se
Now that your unit is jailbroken (or if it already was) you need to use “Cydia” to install the Popcorn Time app. Cydia is like App Store but for jailbroken devices and was installed automatically with the Pangu jailbreak. If for some reason you can’t find Cydia on you iPhone or iPad, simply repeat the jailbreaking process as described above.
Add the Popcorn Time repo in Cydia using this guide. The URL for time4popcorn is http://cydia.popcorn-time.se.
In Cydia, go to sources and find the time4popcorn repo in the list. From here you can (finally) install the iOS Popcorn Time app.
Alternatively you can try out Movie Box instead that depending on the version can be installed to iOS units with or without jailbreak (doesn’t always work without). Another jailbreak-free option is PlayBox that unfortunately is reported to be quite unstable for some.
Popcorn Time for Mac OS X
With Popcorn Time for Mac OS X you can enjoy the large variety of both recent and classic movies as well as TV-shows on any newer Apple Mac. This includes iMac, iMac Retina 5K, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Mini and Mac Pro. The basic requirement for any of these devices is that it’s running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer.
It’s easy to install but requires bypassing Gatekeeper; a native OS X feature to prevent accidental installation of potentially harmful software.

Installing Popcorn Time on Mac OS X
To protect users from accidentally installing harmful apps on their Mac OS X computer Apple has implemented “Gatekeeper“. It’s a security measure that prevents installation of apps downloaded anywhere else than Apple’s own Mac App Store.
Attempting to do so opens up a dialogue box displaying the message “Name-of -app can’t be opened because it’s from an unidentified developer”. The only option is to click OK and close the box.
Fortunately Gatekeeper isn’t meant to be ironclad and can very easily and safely be bypassed. This is, however, also necessary if you want to install Popcorn Time (or iOS installer) on your Mac since Popcorn Time isn’t in the Apple App Store but must be downloaded as a .dmg file.
Your Mac won’t let you install Popcorn Time because it’s from an unidentified developer.
The easiest way to install apps not downloaded through App Store is to simply right-click (or control+click) the downloaded .dmg file and choose “open”. A dialogue box will ask the user to decide whether or no to install an app from an unidentified source. After clicking “ok” the app will install and behave like any legit app from App Store and can thus easily be uninstalled by dragging it to the trash.
Installation of apps from unidentified developers can be permanently enabled by gong to System Preferences – Security & Privacy – General and select “Anywhere” in “Allow applications downloaded from:”. You might have to unlock these options by clicking the padlock icon which enables change in this part of the system preferences.
The permanent solution should only be considered for experienced users as it opens up for accidental installation of possibly harmful apps (Popcorn Time is perfectly harmless).
Allow installation of apps downloaded from “anywhere” to get rid of the “unidentified developer” message permanently on you Mac OS X computer.
Where can Popcorn Time be downloaded?
Popcorn Time is an open source project which means the program code is openly shared. Consequently, there are several versions or forks to choose from – most claiming to be the official and/or best – which can be confusing. Learn more about the forks and where to download Popcorn Time.
What devices is Popcorn Time available for?
Popcorn Time is available to most devices and platforms such as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS (iPad and iPhone), Android and Android TV.
It can also beam/stream/cast video using Chromecast,Apple TV with AirPlay and DLNA.
Is Popcorn Time illegal?
Unlimited free access to thousands of movies and TV-shows makes most wonder if Popcorn Time is illegal. There’s no simple answer to the question as laws regarding filesharing aren’t the same across the world. In the end it’s up to the courts to interpret the law and decide what’s legal or not.
However, it is certain that if your country’s laws prohibit unauthorized downloading and/or sharing of copyright protected material; using Popcorn Time to watch such content is definitely in violation to those laws. But since using Popcorn Time doesn’t necessarily violate any copyrights, the service itself should be perfectly legal, at least in theory.
To be completely sure what rules apply to your current situation, you should seek legal council or at least check up on the laws under which jurisdiction you live. Learn more in our article about the subject: Is Popcorn Time illegal to use?
Can Popcorn Time be used anonymously?
Yes, a VPN for Popcorn Time makes it impossible to trace users by hiding their IP-address.
What movies and TV-shows are available?
The contents of Popcorn Time are aggregated from third-party torrent indexing sites. Visit YTS (movies) and EZTV (TV shows) respectively to see what you can watch with Popcorn Time.
How does it work?
Popcorn Time uses P2P technology (BitTorrent) for distribution so the users share with each other instead of downloading from a central server. As a user you aren’t confronted with the technology behind serving the menus and delivering the content. The developers saved you that trouble and that’s part of how Popcorn Time has become so popular across the world.
Popcorn Time has taken the process of searching for, downloading, and playing a video file and streamlined it tremendously. The menus are populated by “harvesting” information from popular torrent indexing sites (EZTV and YTS) showing not only what’s available to watch but also provides options for subtitles and quality as well as descriptions and ratings.
A single click or tap on “Watch Now” starts the download and shortly after – when the download speed is sufficient for a smooth viewing experience – playback begins. Once playing, you’ll find common playback options such as pause, resume, search etc., just like you would in any paid (and legal) video streaming service. The process of searching, downloading and watching videos with torrents has been simplified so much that anybody can do it.
The applications are available for the most popular operating systems and can be installed on almost every kind of device. Popcorn Time is thus available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, Android TV and iOS (iPhone and iPad).
